Drip irrigation

Drip irrigation is a watering method that delivers water slowly and directly to plant roots through a network of tubing and small emitters, releasing it drop by drop at low pressure instead of spraying it over the whole surface of a yard.

Drip irrigation is a low-pressure system that carries water through flexible tubing laid along garden beds and releases it through emitters placed at the base of each plant. The water seeps slowly into the soil right above the root zone, so very little is lost to wind, runoff, or evaporation. The whole system runs off a standard outdoor faucet or hose bib, usually with a pressure regulator and a filter at the head.

The defining contrast is with sprinklers and spray heads, which throw water through the air across a broad area, including paths and bare soil where nothing grows. Drip puts water only where roots can reach it, at a slow rate the soil can absorb. Because it wets the soil and not the foliage, it also keeps leaves dry, which discourages many fungal diseases that thrive on damp leaves.

In a real backyard, drip tubing usually runs under a layer of mulch through planting beds, around shrubs, or along a row of vegetables in a raised bed. Emitters come in different flow rates, so a thirsty tree and a small perennial on the same line each get an appropriate amount. A simple battery timer at the faucet automates the schedule, watering early in the morning without anyone touching it.

For a homeowner or contractor, the payoff is steadier plant health on less water, which matters in dry regions and under watering restrictions. Drip lines hide under mulch instead of cluttering the view, and a buried or covered system needs little upkeep beyond an occasional check for clogged emitters. Plants that get consistent moisture at the root establish faster and survive heat better.
