Design costs & hiring

How to estimate landscaping costs?

Estimate landscaping costs by measuring your yard's square footage and applying typical per-square-foot rates for the level of work you want. In 2026, basic work like sod and planting beds runs about $4 to $12 per square foot, mid-range projects with some hardscape $12 to $25, and high-end builds with patios, walls, and lighting $40 or more.

Then itemize the big pieces. Paver patios run $15 to $30 per square foot, retaining walls $60 to $100 per face foot, shrubs $25 to $80 each installed, and trees $150 to $500. Labor usually adds 50 to 80 percent on top of materials. Get three written quotes; a 30 percent spread between contractors is normal.
