The four elements of landscape design are line, form, texture, and color. Line is the edges your eye follows: bed lines, paths, fence tops. Form is the shape of plants and structures, like a rounded boxwood against an upright arborvitae. Texture is how coarse or fine things read from a distance, and color ties the beds, hardscape, and house together.
Most weak yards fail on one element, usually line. Curved bed edges and a clear path do more for a front yard than another flat of annuals. A useful exercise is squinting at a photo of your yard: shapes and lines stay visible while details disappear, which shows you what is actually missing.
