Backyards

How do I design my backyard landscape?

Start by deciding how you want to use the space, then divide the yard into zones for those activities before picking a single plant. Most backyard designs come down to three or four zones: a seating or dining area near the house, open lawn or play space, planting beds around the edges, and perhaps a focal point like a fire pit.

Next, work with what the site gives you. Note where the sun falls through the day, where water pools after rain, and which views you want to hide or keep. Choose one style, modern, cottage, or tropical for example, and stick to it so the yard reads as one space. Place paths and hardscape first, then plants, sized for what they'll be in five years.
